POKOTABI / Ikoi.
Ikoi.
Housed in a converted nagaya row house in Torigoe, Taito Ward, Ikoi. pairs slow-simmered vegetable spice curry and classic baked sweets with artisanal tableware and a calm setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Tucked down a lane in Torigoe, Taito Ward, Ikoi. occupies a converted traditional nagaya row house. The 1st floor features vintage homeware and craft ceramics, while the cafe itself is set up on the 2nd floor. Guests place and pay for their orders at the 1st-floor counter before slipping off their shoes to head upstairs, where tatami mats, characterful chairs, and rugs create a lived-in calm reminiscent of dropping into a relative's home.
A staple draw on the savory side is the vegetable spice curry. Onions and tomatoes are gently stewed down to coax out their natural sweetness into a mellow roux, crowned with vegetables that are grilled to order so their freshness balances the soft aroma of spices. Lighter bites include avocado toast—accented with cream cheese, salted kelp, and shiso for a Japanese touch—as well as hot dogs served on round buns.
Desserts offer seasonal and daily rotations, ideal for an afternoon pause. The classic pudding delivers a nostalgic, steadfast treat: a firm custard bathed in bittersweet caramel sauce, finished with a soft cloud of whipped cream. Baked sweets also play with inventive pairings, from melon jasmine shortcake infused with fruit and herbal aromas to seasonal parfaits.
To drink, careful hand-drip medium-dark roast Ethiopian coffee makes a clean companion, as does a citrusy orange-scented black tea soda. Note that payment is cash only. It is an appealing stop for unwinding in the quiet of the shitamachi afternoon while admiring hand-crafted ceramics.
